British colonists first came across Persian meels in India, and erroneously referred to them as "Indian clubs" despite their Middle Eastern origin. The design of the "Nal", as the equipment was referred to, can be seen as a halfway point between a barbell and a dumbbell. It was generally used in pairs, in workouts by wrestlers, bodybuilders, sports players, and others wishing to increase strength and muscle size.

I did a lot of research on this and for my weight (280 lb) I needed something strong. I've had it for a few months now and I'm very happy with it. Relatively quite (slight squeak that I can not find to correct) and it has a very solid build. I tested a lot of units at different stores and this one felt the most natural. I'm 6'6" so the lower arm handles are basically useless for me but the high ones work great.
Maintenance: To move smoothly, cheap treadmill belts require occasional lubricating or waxing. This is a do-it-yourself task for the owner. (You don't need a service call.) The high-end treadmill belts are very low maintenance. If you choose a residential treadmill with a thick belt as explained above, the need for maintenance will probably be minimal; occasional dusting could be all that's required. Choosing a light commercial or full commercial treadmill, you can expect that the belt will be maintenance-free for many thousands of miles.

Advanced applications are so called omnidirectional treadmills. They are designed to move in two dimensions and are intended as the base for a "holodeck". There are several solutions which were proposed and research continues because some issues remain unsolved, such as large size, noise and vibration. There are parallel developments being conducted by researchers working on projects sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs to create virtual reality environments for a wheelchair trainer in order to promote therapeutic exercise.
How does treadmill cushioning work? It's not like the stuffing in a couch; it's more like the suspension or shock absorption system for an automobile. Under its workout belt, the typical treadmill has a 1" thick deck made of wood or a wood-like synthetic material. Running on the deck would be similar to running on a sidewalk -- except that under the deck, and supported by the treadmill's steel frame, are shock absorbers. An example of cheap shock absorbers is metal springs. Higher quality treadmill cushioning components are elastomer grommets, usually made from natural rubber.

Most elliptical trainers work the user's upper and lower body (although some models do not have moving upper body components). Though elliptical trainers are considered to be minimal-impact, they are an example of a weight-bearing form of exercise. They can be self-powered by user-generated motion or need to be plugged in for adjustment of motion and/or for supplying their electronic consoles and resistance systems.
"Selectorized" dumbbells are adjustable dumbbells whose number of plates (i.e. weight) can be easily changed when resting in the dumbbell stand. This is achieved by adjusting the number of plates that follow the handle when lifted, e.g. by turning a dial or moving a selector pin — rather than manually adding or removing plates.
